The Beacon of Hope Resource Center has hosted over 14,000 visiting volunteers that have dedicated themselves to cleaning neighborhoods and assisting homeowners citywide. We need you to help make New Orleans a better, stronger city.

Why was a gargantuan Florida Gator bus cruising down Mirabeau Avenue, stopping in Gentilly Terrace at my house? People came pouring out, ready to work scraping, priming and painting my hou
se. They were not bringing gold, frankincense and myrrh, but something much more valuable -- their time, their "elbow grease" and their big hearts.
In smaller vans and cars, I also had volunteers from St. Louis, Boston and Chattanooga who all worked hard to make my home a beautiful place. Teenagers came with these groups, and let me tell you, they are role models for us all. To give up Christmas vacation to help people gives me hope that this generation of teens will bring significant, positive change.
There were others before them, and each of these groups were here because of the Beacon of Hope, a grass roots organization based in Gentilly, 
helping homeowners in this area. What dedicated people! I cannot thank them enough for the great work they are doing, and in particular, for the amazing transformation of my house, which no longer is the ugly duckling of the block! Ask me how do I feel: If I stepped out of my body, I would burst into blossoms! To all of the aforementioned, may 2010 be in some way magical for you.
